Liverpool transfer news: Alisson offer accepted by Roma as world-record deal nears completion

Liverpool have agreed a world record deal for a goalkeeper after their second offer for AS Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker was accepted on Wednesday morning.

The Independent understands the two clubs have agreed a fee in excess of £65m for the 25-year-old, after Liverpool’s initial offer of £53m plus a further £9m in add-ons was rejected earlier this week.

Liverpool now have permission to speak to the player and hope personal terms can be agreed imminently, after the player this week cut short his summer holiday to Malta.

Alisson is expected to earn around £5m-a-year, placing him among the highest earners at the club.

Alisson Becker will become Klopp’s fourth summer signing.

The deal will make Alisson the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of the game, comfortably eclipsing the €53m paid by Juventus to Parma for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001. The Premier League record is the £34.7m Manchester City paid Benfica last summer for his compatriot, Ederson.

Alisson has been at Roma for two years after starting his career at Brazilian side Internacional.

He spent his first season in Italy playing understudy to former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, but was promoted to Roma’s starting XI this season, making 49 appearances in all competition.

Alisson is also ahead of Ederson in the Brazil national team pecking order, playing in all five of the country’s World Cup games and keeping three clean sheets.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was forced to defend goalkeeper Loris Karius last week after another mistake – this time in a pre-season friendly against Tranmere.

The 25-year-old German spilled a free-kick that allowed the hosts to score in Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Prenton Park.

Karius was at fault for two goals in Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid in the Champions League final, but it was later found that he had concussion.
